Arbor Day, the annual Native Plant Sale, and Children Outdoors events are part of current Montreat Landcare Committee efforts to serve residents and visitors in our small mountain community this spring. Saturday, April 27, sees a celebration of Montreat’s status as a Tree City USA and a gathering of carefully selected vendors and guest speakers to present products and information about the use of native plants in yards and gardens and the overall stewardship of local woodlands and watersheds. Mark your calendars for this public event; details to follow on the Landcare website. Meanwhile, the ecoEXPLORE “hotspots” of the N.C. Arboretum and the TRACK Trail kiosk and path of the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation are in full operation, and welcome children and adults to enjoy them. See http://www.montreatlandcare.org/project/children-outdoors/. The kiosk pictured here is near Flat Creek and at the ground level of the Moore Center and shops at Lake Susan in Montreat, and makes a great place to launch your exploration of Montreat.

Efforts over the past year to advise homeowners on practices to reduce the risk from wildfires in Montreat have come together in a new Landcare Committee project. Working with the Montreat Tree Board and N.C. Forest Service, members of the community have held educational events for the public and obtained print and online materials for all interested persons to become better informed about wildfire hazards and how to reduce risk to buildings. A description of the Montreat Landcare “Wildfire Safety:Firewise” project is available at http://www.montreatlandcare.org/project/wildfire-safety-firewise/ .

One important resource for homeowners is the “Firewise” handbook, at http://townofmontreat.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Firewise-1.pdf. For more information about the Montreat Tree Board, see .http://townofmontreat.org/tree-board/.

An important practice for all homeowners, especially those who are seasonal, is to be sure that excessive amounts of underbrush, taller vegetation, and leaf debris are removed from the area immediately around a home or garage. It is noteworthy that rhododendron and mountain laurel can be particularly flammable, so careful pruning is important to reduce risk from spreading wildfire. The photo illustrates one homeowner’s efforts to clear out vegetation close to the home, while still leaving significant shrub and tree cover to maintain a beautiful yard. See Town of Montreat guidelines for yard trash pick-up at http://townofmontreat.org/sanitation/

The Town of Montreat has a brand new “Tree Management Guide” that forms the foundation for an effective, systemic and proactive tree care program along the Town’s rights-of-way and public properties. The guide also contains valuable information concerning topics such as wildfire preparedness and native tree planting tips that address wider interests of the community.

Trees as an essential part of the Montreat social, economic and environmental fabric and have been celebrated since the community’s founding a century ago. The recognition of Montreat as a “Tree City USA” in 2015 formalized the community’s commitment to maintaining the forest canopy that makes the town a special place to live and visit. Trees shade our homes, institutions, businesses and streets. They clean the air and water, reduce storm water run-off, increase property values, reduce energy costs and make neighborhoods greener, safer and healthier.

The guide was adopted unanimously by the Town Council in July, and resulted from a year-long effort by the Montreat Tree Board. The board is charged with addressing issues concerned with the public trees of the community. See http://www.townofmontreat.org/TreeBoard.php . Thus it deals with topics such as dead and at-risk trees along roads, for example. It also will be addressing best practices for maintenance of trees along utility lines, as pictured here. It is the purpose of the guide and part of the mission of the Tree Board to provide data and other information for all entities and members of the Town to better maintain Montreat’s tree population.

The management guide includes sections on the history of Montreat’s woodlands, a description of Tree City USA activities, results of a 2018 inventory of trees, educational opportunities for homeowners, and various guides to tree and shrub planting and protection of buildings from wildfire. A pdf of the guide is available at http://www.townofmontreat.org/documents/TOMTreeManagementGuideAll.pdf.

In partnership with some of the region’s most successful outdoor education organizations, new and contemporary educational resources for the children of the Montreat community’s residents and visitors have been established under a Montreat Landcare project. ecoEXPLORE is an incentive-based citizen science program for children in grades K-8. It combines science exploration with kid-friendly technology to foster a fun learning environment for children while encouraging them to explore the outdoors, take pictures, and participate in citizen science. (See https://www.ecoexplore.net/about/.) TRACK Trail is a self-guided, science-based nature walk for children in Montreat, one of 160 such trails across America. Four colorful brochures guide parents and children in identifying birds, flowers and trees and even doing “animal athletics.” (See http://www.kidsinparks.com/montreat.) Nature backpacks with all sorts of supplies for children and adults to use in exploring the Montreat Cove Ecosystem are available for check-out at the Nature Center. Details including locations are available at http://www.montreatlandcare.org/project/children-outdoors/. (Montreat Conference Center image.)

When over a dozen citizens volunteer to monitor tree health, and all show up for training on a very cold April morning with snow flurries blowing, it could be considered a good sign of the larger community’s concern for its woodlands. As one of 87 official Tree Cities in North Carolina, Montreat (pop. 797) is the fourth smallest. See http://www.montreatlandcare.org/project/tree-city-usa/.

Yet it offers a case study in how town officials, staff and citizens can join with scientists to monitor and resolve issues concerning the health of community trees. With training by professionals with the North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS), town staff and citizen volunteers have been working to make accurate tree health assessments along selected town rights-of-way. In May the volunteer citizen scientists began surveys along about a mile of 20-foot strips adjacent to Assembly Drive, the town’s main road, using I-pads and cellphones customized with an “ESRI Survey1-2-3” application to record data. Findings are being mapped by a recent graduate of Western Carolina University. This will help town staff with tree pruning and removal. Further, the map will locate at-risk trees that may pose a hazard to the safety of pedestrians, automobiles and buildings close to the town’s rights-of-way. Results will be incorporated by the Montreat Tree Board into an initial tree management plan for public trees. See http://www.townofmontreat.org/TreeBoard.php.

Meanwhile a longer term project to save and restore segments of the community’s large population of Eastern and Carolina Hemlock trees has had success. Science-based best practices in an “Integrated Pest Management” program using chemical and biological controls have proven effective in control of an invasive insect pest, the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, which has had devastating effects on the regional hemlock forest. Partners include NCFS as well as the regional Hemlock Restoration Initiative, with funding secured from county and state agencies. See http://www.montreatlandcare.org/project/hemlocks/. Other activities in this small mountain community include efforts by faculty of Montreat College to study restoration of chestnut trees; protection of 2,400 acres of wooded hillsides by the Montreat Conference Center, as a conservation easement in conjunction with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy; and location of a North Carolina Arboretum children’s educational “ecoEXPLORE hotspot” concerning plants, in cooperation with the conference center, town and Montreat Landcare Committee.(Photo A. Vinson.)

The natural features of the Montreat Cove can enrich anyone’s visit or residence here. The mountains, woodlands and waters are part of the community’s cultural, environmental and economic well-being, and constitute a “green infrastructure” that sustains and enriches life. Now the Montreat Landcare Committee has produced a guide and map to some of the important and meaningful spots outdoors in Montreat. A particular aim is to guide children and adults to some places of significance for ecological, aesthetic, recreational, spiritual, educational or other reasons. Described briefly and located on a map are some sites favored for contemplation, nature education, and activities such as fishing and hiking. The brochure, “Montreat Outdoors: A Guide and Map to Some Special Places,” is available as a pdf, Master Outdoors Brochure-March 2018. Or, get a printed version at the town services building of Montreat and also at selected sites of the Montreat Conference Center. Or, send a self-addressed stamped business envelope to Montreat Landcare at P.O. Box 423, Montreat, North Carolina 28757.

Spring 2018 has been a busy time for the Montreat Landcare Committee and the organizations that comprise it, with a bounty of outdoor activities including citizen science and education involving both children and adults, and opportunities to buy and care for native plants. Landcare’s sixth annual Native Plant Sale on April 28 saw a steady stream of visitors to an array of sales and educational stations, while on the same day the community celebrated Arbor Day and its ongoing recognition as a Tree City USA. A filled classroom was introduced to the ecoEXPLORE program of the North Carolina Arboretum, which has located the first of three “hotspot” signs in Montreat for children in grades K-8 who are taking pictures of plants, birds, amphibians and reptiles. Meanwhile in May the Montreat Tree Board is conducting its first-ever inventory of trees along a key roadway, so as to assess at-risk trees in the interest of public safety along road right-of-way. At 1 p.m. ecoEXPLORE staff of the N.C. Arboretum will display live reptiles and amphibians, and if time permits lead a search for salamanders in Flat Creek. For details see the “Cool and Fun Programs for Children” flyer. . Complete information about the event is at http://www.montreatlandcare.org/project/native-plant-sale-arbor-day-celebration-2/. Children and adults alike may find the demonstration of the town’s new bucket truck during the Montreat Tree Board homeowner tree care activity at noon an interesting action experience! A food vendor will be on-site all day.
